Workshop on Building Global Competence in Geriatric Nursing Held in Surabaya
November 19, 2025SURABAYA, INDONESIA – The Dementia and Aging Care Research Center (DACRC), Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, hosted the Visiting Fellow Program from 17 to 22 November 2025. The program aimed to enhance research capacity, expand international collaboration, and strengthen the development of dementia and aging studies.
The program opened with an introduction to DACRC’s research focus, community engagement programs, and innovation agenda. The Visiting Fellow met researchers and explored ongoing studies in dementia care, gerontological nursing, and digital health. The session encouraged participants to build shared goals that support long-term collaboration.
Advancing Research and Mentorship
Throughout the week, DACRC organized scientific meetings that encouraged active dialogue between researchers, faculty members, and students. The Visiting Fellow guided young researchers through mentoring sessions that covered research design, publication strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration. These sessions supported the development of early-career researchers and strengthened DACRC’s academic ecosystem.
In addition, the program included workshops on dementia and aging. Participants learned about current global frameworks and evidence-based approaches in gerontological care. The workshops encouraged participants to adopt innovative methods and apply research findings within academic and community settings. The discussions highlighted the importance of integrating technology, empathy, and scientific evidence into dementia education.
Engaging Communities and Expanding Innovation
The Visiting Fellow joined DACRC’s team on a field visit to UPTD Griya Wreda Jambangan, Surabaya. The visit allowed participants to observe community-based elderly care models and learn about challenges faced by caregivers and older adults. The experience helped the team understand local needs and identify opportunities for collaborative research.
The program also included the International Seminar: Building Age-Friendly Societies, which featured global experts in dementia and geriatric mental health. The seminar promoted academic exchange and strengthened DACRC’s role as a research hub in aging studies.
Planning Future Collaboration
During the final sessions, DACRC and the Visiting Fellow discussed curriculum development for gerontic nursing and outlined new directions for joint research. The team drafted recommendations and proposed several follow-up activities to support sustained collaboration. The initiative marked a significant step toward building a research network that advances innovation in dementia and aging care.
Through this program, DACRC reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based elderly care. The center continues to support initiatives that empower researchers and improve the well-being of aging populations.
